Pompidou Centre ' Posted By: Roland Lefevre

For centuries, Paris has been attracting artists from across the seven seas. From the masterpieces in its museums to the delicate cakes of the patisseries, creativity is abundant in the streets of Paris, and the Pompidou Centre ushers in the modern era of artistry to the city. The vision of Andr AND eacute; Malraux was to create a nerve centre for French art and culture, so an international competition was held to find the best design to house the idea. Winners Renzo Piano, Richard Rodgers and Gianfranco Franchini stunned the world by producing a structure that brought the details of modern construction to attention. Pipes and wiring were moved outside the supporting struts and colour coded (blue AND ndash; air, green- plumbing, yellow AND ndash; electrical etc.) AND ndash; even the escalators are encased in a glass tube that hangs on the outside wall. The result was plenty of empty space inside that can be utilized for displays. In its location between the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre, at the edge of medieval Paris, this radical modern building was the ideal place for the National Museum of Modern Art (MNAM).
